On the evening of a Sunday, in the year 1578, a splendid fête was given in the magnificent hotel just built opposite the Louvre, on the other side of the water, by the family of Montmorency, who, allied to the royalty of France, held themselves equal to princes. This fête was to celebrate the wedding of François d'Epinay de St. Luc, a great friend and favorite of the king, Henri III., with Jeanne de Crossé-Brissac, daughter of the marshal of that name.

Mordieu! The clang of sharp steel, the clatter of knives, the sting of love and betrayal. What entertainment! What spirit. Two great heroes, Chicot, a gentleman Jester, nearly as cunning as the noble Dantès, and nearly as vengeful. Bussy, worthy to be one of the Musketeers and his young friend and doctor, the honorable Remy. The great beauty Diana, for whom all hearts noble or common stir, and her ignoble husband - an unrequited, unloveable and jealous lover. The buffoonish and vain King Henri; his venomous brother and equally evil cousin. The corpulent and comedic monk. Young unlucky men at arms. The noble St. Luc and his darling young wife. The fleeting appearance of the great Henri of Navarre and even his nemesis mother-in-law, the devilish Queen Mother. A conspiracy, a confessional, scheduled duels and secret rendezvous. Ventre de biche! What a story.Perhaps not written with the quality of Three Musketeers or The Count of Monte Cristo, it is nevertheless a fast moving, fun adventure filled with great characters, each drawn unforgettably.
I loved the Queen Margot (even better) and I loved this one too. Can't wait for The 45 Guardsman, which I have already ordered.

Chicot the Jester Alexandre Dumas 9781516972340 Books Reviews
This is some abridged version that gives wrong general impression of the Dumas' series.
Its a novel that here in Greece is not well known. I suggest it .Dumas has the talent to make history a personal case .........The history as is lived by a man who participates in the evolution of the facts. Its amazing how he defines the characters and their emotional state.
I have read a lot of Alexander Dumas' writings and this one was incredible. The plots and sub plots well written.
This was hard for me to get into, and frankly I dropped it. I read some mention in problems with the translation not be correct and/or somehow very good. Maybe that is it's problem. I will probably pick it up again and try to finish it. I have read A LOT by Alexander Dumas and loved each work. So, I'm going to guess the above.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and plan to read the sequel. As with all the Dumas I have read, it is escapism at it's finest. No, it wasn't the best novel I ever read, nor the most factual portrayal of history, but it spurred my interest to learn more about the time period and actual characters from history books. This story would make a great screenplay too. I think that is Dumas' genius. He creates great characters and teaches history "romanticized". It is the reader's responsibility to remember that it is embellished and to read other sources for the "truth". These were serials in news papers after all.
The reviewer who over simplifies (denigrates) the story line in their review should be banned from reading Dumas as they miss the point entirely. Dianna was a virtuous woman who was saved from a monster by a monster. She and Bussy were cheated by fate and royalty of their happiness together. The situation drove an otherwise honorable and brave gentleman to compromise his principles for love, thinking justice would be served in the end. He payed the price of poetic justice while acquitting himself well with his sword.
Chicot was paternalistic in dealing with Henri III and not, in my opinion devious or self interested.
And, in a theme I perceive in other of Dumas' works, the common man is subject to the whim of kings and princes while the kings and princes answer to God.
Vive Dumas!
Note that the five stars are for the story not this publication. The print is sloppy and to keep a straight right margin the space between the words varies all the time. Find the book from another publisher BUT READ THIS NOVEL! It is number two in a sort of trilogi the first being The Queen Margot and the last The 45 Lifeguards. They can be read seperately but some referances to names do that it is best to read them in the right order. Now, Chicot the Jester is so filled with romance, humour, chivalry, eating and drinking and swordsplay that it is a display of fireworks. The many pages long showdown fight in the end is breathtaking! And here is an interesting question Why is it always the same classics that are made into film? When it is J. F. Cooper it is always The Last of the Mohicans though The Pathfinder and The Prairie are equally dramatic and better stories. When it is Dickens it is Oliver Twist again Again and so on. And when it is the master of action and romance, Alexandre Dumas, it is always The Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. It is a sin and a shame. Chicot the Jester has alle the elements for a great picture. Anyway, enjoy reading it there is never a dull moment!
Also titled "La Dame du Monsoreau", this is a two-headed romance that's more about the tragedy of Bussy and his lover than the likeable Chicot and the convoluted history of the Valois. Nevertheless, along with "Marguerite de Valois" ("La Reine Margot"), its prequel, and "The Forty-Five Guardsmen", its sequel, it's the starting point for the famous D'Artagnan-and-pals series within the Dumas oeuvre. Spoiler alert Bussy (Louis de Clermont, Seigneur Bussy d'Amboise) was a notorious duelist, predatory bisexual, and assassin extraordinaire on St. Bartholomew's Day whose conquests included the younger Margot prior to his death at the hands of the Comte de Monsoreau. But what the heck, revenge, war and the cloister make for a rollicking story.
